- Check the club's specialty: minerals/lapidary, fossils, gold prospecting, faceting. Match it to what you actually want to learn.
- Read the meeting schedule before joining — some clubs meet weeknights, others Saturday mornings.
- Most clubs offer a free guest visit. Show up to one meeting before paying dues.
- Look for a club with active field trips — that's where you'll learn the most.
