Sapphire Lookalikes: How to Tell Them Apart
Topaz is softer (Mohs 8) and has perfect basal cleavage -- a flat, pearly break across the base of the crystal that sapphire never shows. Topaz crystals are orthorhombic with a different prismatic habit, and at specific gravity 3.5, noticeably lighter in the hand than corundum.
Kyanite forms blade-shaped crystals with a distinctive variable hardness: 4.5 along the length and 6.5 across the width. No other common blue mineral shows this directional hardness difference. Sapphire is uniformly 9 in all directions and never forms blades.
Tanzanite is significantly softer (Mohs 6.5-7) with strong trichroic pleochroism -- blue, violet, and burgundy visible from different crystal directions. It also has one direction of perfect cleavage. Sapphire shows weaker dichroism and no meaningful cleavage.
Spinel crystallizes in the isometric system (octahedral habit) rather than hexagonal, and has a lower specific gravity (3.58-3.61). In Montana gravel concentrates, spinel is noticeably lighter than sapphire. Spinel also lacks the dichroism visible in most sapphires.
