Augite shows two cleavage planes at nearly 90°, creating a blocky rectangular cross-section. Tourmaline lacks cleavage entirely. Augite is softer (Mohs 5.5-6) and forms stubby prismatic crystals rather than the elongated striated prisms of tourmaline.
