About Rochester Academy of Science

The Rochester Academy of Science Mineral Section was formed in 1884 as a 501(c)(3) organization educating members and the public about mineralogy, geology, and related topics. The section maintains books, field guides, DVDs, and magazine collections held by its librarian, and archives video recordings of most meeting speakers since November 2012, plus lecture archives from the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium dating back to 1989. The Symposium, run jointly with other groups since the 1970s, held its 50th and final edition in 2023 and has not resumed. The section runs field trips and collecting outings, such as a June 2026 fossil/mineral picnic at Farash Observatory, and works jointly with the Academy's Fossil Section on some programming.
