Gold Prospecting by Region
West Coast & Sierra Nevada — California
California produced more gold than anywhere else in North America during the Gold Rush (1848–1855) and its streams still carry placer gold today. The Mother Lode — a 120-mile belt of gold-bearing quartz veins running through the Sierra Nevada foothills — is the primary source. Alaska is in a category of its own for gold prospecting. The state leads the U.S. in gold production and has placer deposits distributed across remote and accessible terrain. Alaskan gold is characteristically coarser than Lower 48 deposits — nuggets are significantly more common.

Understanding Placer Gold — How Gold Gets in Streams
Primary vs. Placer Gold
Primary (lode) gold is gold in its original geological context — in quartz veins, disseminated in altered rock, or associated with sulfide minerals. Lode gold requires hard rock mining to extract.
Placer gold is gold that has been liberated from its primary source by weathering and erosion and transported by water to a secondary concentration. It is what recreational prospectors find in stream gravels, alluvial fans, and beach sands.
How Gold Concentrates in Streams — The Physics
Gold (specific gravity 19.3) is roughly 7 times heavier than the quartz sand and gravel it travels with (SG ~2.65). When water velocity decreases — at inside bends, behind boulders, at the base of waterfalls, where a fast tributary meets a slow main stream — the water drops its heaviest sediment load first. Gold drops out before everything else.
This means the richest gold concentrations are always where water slows. Experienced prospectors read the river for velocity changes: inside bends, immediately downstream of bedrock obstructions, in potholes and crevices on bedrock surfaces where gold has accumulated over thousands of years.
The Bedrock Relationship
The most important concept in placer prospecting is bedrock. Gold is heavy enough to work its way down through gravel and sand over time, concentrating on or just above the impermeable bedrock layer. The best placer gold is almost always at or within a few inches of bedrock. Use a crevice tool to clean out bedrock crevices — this is often where the coarsest gold in an area is found.
Black Sand — Your Indicator Mineral
Black sand — a mixture of magnetite (magnetic) and ilmenite (non-magnetic) — is almost always found with placer gold because these heavy iron minerals concentrate by the same physics as gold. The absence of black sand in a known gold-bearing area almost always means you are in the wrong layer or location.
How to Identify Real Gold in the Field
The most common mistake new prospectors make is confusing pyrite ("fool's gold") or mica with real gold. These five tests eliminate every common imposter definitively.
Test 1 — The Color Test
Move the specimen between direct sunlight and shade. Real gold maintains a consistent, warm, slightly dull buttery yellow in all lighting — it does not flash or sparkle. Pyrite loses much of its color and appears darker or greenish in shadow and flashes dramatically when rotated. Mica is silvery and flashes dramatically with any angle change.
Test 2 — The Weight Test
Place the specimen in your gold pan with water and swirl gently. Real gold (SG 19.3) sinks immediately to the very bottom and stays there even with vigorous swirling. Pyrite (SG 5.0) moves noticeably and will gradually work toward the rim. Mica floats immediately.
Test 3 — The Scratch Test
Press a copper penny (Mohs hardness 3.5) firmly against a flat surface of the specimen. Real gold (Mohs 2.5) — the copper penny scratches it clearly. Pyrite (Mohs 6–6.5) — the copper penny cannot scratch pyrite at all. If the penny scratches it, pyrite is eliminated. If the penny cannot scratch it, gold is eliminated.
Test 4 — The Streak Test
Drag the specimen firmly across an unglazed porcelain streak plate. Real gold leaves a bright yellow streak — one of very few minerals that leaves a yellow streak. Pyrite leaves a greenish-black to black streak. This is the most reliable single differentiator between pyrite and gold.
Test 5 — The Shape and Malleability Test
Real placer gold is rounded, irregular, and often flattened from tumbling in stream transport. It has no geometric crystal form. If you tap it with a hard object, it flattens — gold is extremely malleable. Pyrite forms perfect cubic crystals with flat geometric faces and sharp edges. Strike pyrite with a hammer and it shatters or sparks.

Legal Rules for Gold Prospecting on Public Land
Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Land — The Most Permissive
BLM land is governed by the General Mining Law of 1872, which establishes the right of all citizens to prospect for and collect gold on open federal public land.
What is always allowed (no permit):
