Where to Find Lake Superior Agate in Minnesota

The Lake Superior agate is Minnesota's state gemstone. These agates formed over 1 billion years ago in the gas vesicles of Keweenaw basalt lava flows along the Midcontinent Rift. Glaciers ripped the agates from their host rock during the Pleistocene and deposited them in till and outwash gravel across the state. Minnesota has more Lake Superior agates than any other state because the glacial transport path carried them directly south and southwest from the Lake Superior basin.

Lake Superior agates show concentric red, orange, and white banding caused by iron oxide (hematite) in the chalcedony layers. The agates are hard (Mohs 7), heavy for their size, and have a waxy luster when wet. Wet every suspect stone — the banding is invisible on a dry agate. Size ranges from thumbnail to rare specimens exceeding a pound. Sort gravel piles systematically; do not cherry-pick — you will miss the small gems.

Where to Find Thomsonite in Minnesota

Thomsonite is a zeolite mineral that occurs in the vesicles of Precambrian basalt along the North Shore of Lake Superior. It is found as radiating crystal clusters — white, pink, and green — filling gas bubbles in the billion-year-old lava flows. Wave action on the Lake Superior shoreline frees thomsonite nodules from the basalt and polishes them into smooth beach stones. High-quality thomsonite beach nodules with concentric "eye" patterns are valued by collectors and lapidaries.

Thomsonite beach nodules show concentric rings of pink, green, and white when wet or polished. They are small — most are under 1 inch diameter. The "eye" pattern (concentric circles viewed from above) is the highest-value form. Thomsonite is hardness 5-5.5 and takes a fair polish with cerium oxide. Distinguish from plain quartz beach pebbles by the color banding and slightly lower hardness (thomsonite scratches with a steel knife; quartz does not). Bring a spray bottle and a keen eye — these stones are easy to walk past.

Where to Find Iron Minerals in Minnesota

Minnesota's Iron Range — the Mesabi, Vermilion, and Cuyuna ranges — contains some of the largest iron ore deposits in North America. The Mesabi Range, stretching 110 miles across St. Louis and Itasca counties, is the primary source. The ore occurs in banded iron formations (BIF) of the Biwabik Iron Formation, roughly 1.9 billion years old. Hematite ore is heavy, dark gray to black, and leaves a red-brown streak. Bring a magnet — magnetite-rich BIF is strongly magnetic. A rock hammer is useful for trimming road cut specimens.
