Actual driftwood is light — pick it up and you know immediately. Petrified wood of the same size weighs three to five times more. Driftwood can be scratched with a fingernail or knife, while petrified wood scratches steel. Driftwood splinters when broken; petrified wood fractures conchoidally like glass.
Bog wood (subfossil wood) is partially preserved organic material from peat bogs. It's darker than fresh wood and partially mineralized, but still far lighter than petrified wood and soft enough to carve with hand tools. It retains some flexibility and won't fracture conchoidally.
