Kilbourne Hole

Best Time for Crystal Hunting in New Mexico

Fall through spring is prime in the southern desert — Deming, Kilbourne Hole, and the Cerrillos country are at their best October through April, when the days are cool and the rattlesnakes quiet. Summer works at elevation: the Luna geode country and the northern pegmatites sit high enough to stay comfortable through July and August.

Respect the monsoon. July and August thunderstorms flood arroyos fast — never camp in a dry wash, and stay off wet clay roads.
