About this location

Cookes Peak rises to 6,408 feet in Luna County, New Mexico, about 17 miles north of Deming, at the center of a historic silver-lead-zinc mining district established in 1880 and worked until 1967. The surrounding BLM land is genuinely good, well-documented rockhounding country today — agate, jasper, and quartz turn up across the high desert, and the district's old mines have more recently produced exceptional fluorite specimens. This is a straightforward, easy-access BLM public-land site with no permits or fees required.

Always seek permission where required, follow local laws, and practice Leave No Trace. Locations and details are community-submitted and may be inaccurate. Not sure what's legal here? Read our full guide to rockhounding laws by land type.
