Herkimer Diamond Lookalikes: How to Tell Them Apart
Regular quartz crystals almost always have one terminated end and one rough attachment base where they grew against host rock. Herkimer diamonds are doubly-terminated with crystal faces on both ends. Regular quartz also forms in different host rocks — granite, pegmatite, veins — rather than dolomite.
Actual diamonds are dramatically harder (Mohs 10 versus 7), form in a completely different crystal system (cubic, not hexagonal), and occur in kimberlite pipes or alluvial deposits — never in dolomite. Diamonds also have perfect octahedral cleavage, while quartz has no cleavage at all.
Tumbled or waterworn glass can look superficially similar to a clear crystal, but glass lacks crystal faces entirely — no flat, geometrically arranged surfaces. Glass often contains gas bubbles visible under magnification. It also fractures differently and is softer (Mohs 5-6).
