About Franklin Gem & Mineral Society
The Franklin Gem and Mineral Society (doing business as the Franklin Gem and Mineral Museum) was established November 10, 1971 and chartered February 28, 1972. After twelve months of fundraising and over 2,000 hours of volunteer work, the Society opened the Franklin Gem and Mineral Museum on May 25, 1974 in the historic Old Macon County Jail; the museum welcomed over 7,000 visitors in its first ten months. The Society runs a Junior Rockhounds (Pebble Pups) youth program and publishes a monthly newsletter, The Mountain Gem. Visitors are always welcome at meetings.
