About this location

Sacheen Lake is a 307-acre lake in Pend Oreille County, in Washington's far northeast corner, with a Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) public water access site on its shore. It's primarily a fishing and boating destination, but garnet turns up in the lake's gravels and along its shoreline — part of the broader garnet-bearing gravel deposits found across northern Washington. This isn't a developed dig site with facilities built for rockhounds; it's a public lake access area where garnet-hunting is a secondary activity you can do while you're there. Bring a shovel and a sieve and work the loose gravel and sand along the shore rather than expecting a dedicated collecting area.

Always seek permission where required, follow local laws, and practice Leave No Trace. Locations and details are community-submitted and may be inaccurate. Not sure what's legal here? Read our full guide to rockhounding laws by land type.

  • Garnet — deep red to brownish-red crystals reported in shoreline gravels and sands. General Washington garnet-hunting advice (sieve loose gravel, wear gloves) applies; no source gives crystal size or quality specific to Sacheen Lake.

Getting there

From Spokane, take US Highway 2 north about 30 miles to State Highway 211, then north on SR 211 about 4 miles to the Sacheen Terrace Dr. turnoff, following signs to the public fishing/water access site.

Collecting here

General-area inference: work the shoreline gravel and shallow sand with a small shovel and sieve, typical of Washington garnet-gravel hunting elsewhere in the region. No digging into the lakebed or disturbing the developed access area — this is a boat launch and fishing access site, not a permitted dig area.

Know before you go

The Sacheen Lake water access site is managed by the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife and is open year-round; it has a parking lot, ADA parking, and restrooms, but camping isn't allowed. Collecting rules for rocks/minerals on WDFW water access land follow Washington's general personal-use collecting guidance — confirm current rules directly with WDFW before taking anything, and see Washington DNR's recreation and collecting guidance: https://dnr.wa.gov/recreation.
