Muskingum County

Muskingum County sits at the eastern edge of the Vanport flint formation, the same 300-million-year-old chert layer that made neighboring Licking County's Flint Ridge one of the most important prehistoric quarry sites in North America. This is a county-level entry rather than one specific spot — the Vanport formation crops out across ridge tops in both counties, and flint turns up in road cuts, plowed fields, and creek gravel wherever it's exposed. The catch is that almost all of that ground is private property. The one documented example we found, Nethers Farm, runs an honor-system fee for flint collecting — a useful model for what to expect elsewhere in the county, not a guarantee of access anywhere else.

Muskingum County surrounds Zanesville, Ohio, with the flint-bearing ground concentrated near the Licking County line to the west, close to Flint Ridge. Road cuts along State Route 668 and nearby township roads in the Flint Ridge area occasionally expose Vanport flint.

Surface picking after plowing is the typical method on private farmland that grants permission; no digging equipment needed. Flint Ridge Ancient Quarries and Nature Preserve itself, across the county line in Licking County, is managed by the Ohio History Connection as a museum and preserve — treat it as a look-don't-take site, not a collecting destination.

Most flint-bearing land in Muskingum County is private, and permission is required before collecting — this is not open public land by default. Nethers Farm is one documented example that allows collecting on an honor-system fee basis, but a mention here does not imply standing permission; contact the landowner before visiting. Flint Ridge State Memorial itself does not permit collecting — it's a preserved archaeological site.
