About this location
Carnelian Beach is a real, documented gravel beach on Isle Royale — the large island in Lake Superior that makes up almost all of Isle Royale National Park, Michigan. It sits on the island's shoreline in Keweenaw County, alongside another named locality nearby, Agate Beach. Quartz in its agate and chalcedony forms is documented here, consistent with the Lake Superior region's famous glacially-scattered agates. The catch: this isn't a roadside pull-off. Isle Royale has no roads and no bridge — you reach it only by ferry or seaplane from Grand Portage, Minnesota, or Houghton/Copper Harbor, Michigan, and once you're there, it's a national park. Collecting rocks, minerals, or anything else natural is prohibited park-wide. Worth knowing about for identification and hiking interest, not as a place to fill a rock bag.
Always seek permission where required, follow local laws, and practice Leave No Trace. Locations and details are community-submitted and may be inaccurate. Not sure what's legal here? Read our full guide to rockhounding laws by land type.
Found Here
- Quartz (agate and chalcedony varieties) — documented at Carnelian Beach specifically. Lake Superior agates here form as amygdule fillings in the region's ancient volcanic rock, then get tumbled and rounded by wave action on the beach.
- Isle Royale's beaches broadly are known for agate and prehnite as "island gemstones," per general island geology writeups — Carnelian Beach and Agate Beach are two of the named spots where this shows up.
Difficulty
Getting there
Isle Royale is an island, not a drive-up location. Access is by National Park Service ferry or concession boat from Copper Harbor or Houghton, Michigan, or Grand Portage, Minnesota, or by seaplane. Once on the island, Carnelian Beach is reached on foot along the shoreline trail network — there is no vehicle access anywhere on Isle Royale.
Collecting here
Not applicable — collecting is prohibited. If you're on Isle Royale for the hiking, backpacking, or scenery, Carnelian Beach and Agate Beach are worth a walk for looking at agate in place, but nothing leaves the park.
Know before you go
Isle Royale National Park, like all National Park Service units, prohibits removing natural or cultural features — rocks, minerals, plants, artifacts — under 36 CFR 2.1. That rule applies fully to Carnelian Beach. This is a look-don't-take destination. Plan the trip like the backcountry expedition it is: ferry/seaplane reservations, National Park entrance requirements, and Lake Superior weather all apply. Check the park's own site for current ferry schedules and backcountry permit rules before going.
