Utah's Geode Country: Volcanic Origins in the Great Basin
Utah sits at the intersection of the Basin and Range Province and the Colorado Plateau — two very different geologic provinces that both produce geodes, though by different mechanisms. The state's most famous geode locality, the Dugway Geode Beds in Juab County, owes its existence to Oligocene-age volcanism roughly 32 million years ago. Massive eruptions deposited thick sheets of rhyolite tuff (compacted volcanic ash) across the western Utah desert. As the tuff cooled and compacted, gas bubbles trapped within the ash became void spaces. Over millions of years, silica-rich groundwater percolated through the porous tuff and deposited concentric layers of chalcedony and quartz inside those cavities, building geodes from the outside in.
This volcanic origin gives Utah geodes a very different character from the carbonate-hosted Keokuk geodes of the Midwest. The Dugway geodes are smaller on average, with thinner shells of blue-gray to white chalcedony rather than thick limestone rinds. The quartz crystal linings tend to be finer-grained druzy, though some specimens have well-developed points up to a centimeter long. The setting is different too — instead of wading creeks in green farmland, you are walking open desert on BLM land with no shade, no water, and no cell signal.
Geology of the Dugway Geode Beds
The host rock at Dugway is the Drum Mountains Rhyolite, an Oligocene welded tuff that forms low hills and eroded badlands in the desert west of the Drum Mountains. The geode-bearing layer sits within a specific stratigraphic zone in the upper part of the tuff. As the tuff erodes, geodes weather out of the soft matrix and accumulate on the surface — which is why surface collecting here is so productive. Every rain event liberates new specimens from the host rock.
The geodes themselves are spherical to slightly oblate, typically 1.5 to 5 inches in diameter. Larger specimens exist but are uncommon. The outer shell is chalcedony — a microcrystalline form of quartz — ranging from pale blue-gray to cream white. Some shells have a botryoidal (grape-like) exterior texture. The interior is typically lined with druzy quartz crystals, clear to milky white, with individual points ranging from sugar-grain size to about 8 mm. A small percentage of Dugway geodes contain pale pink quartz, light amethyst coloring, or secondary calcite crystals. Completely solid specimens — sometimes called "duds" — are chalcedony throughout with no crystal cavity.
Top Collecting Locations
1. Dugway Geode Beds — Juab County
GPS: 39.9300°N, 113.1000°W (main collecting area / informal parking flat)
Land status: Bureau of Land Management (BLM) — public land, open for casual collecting under 43 CFR 8365. No permit required.
Collecting limit: 25 pounds per day plus one piece, per the BLM casual collecting rule for petrified wood and mineral specimens on public land.
Vehicle: High-clearance recommended. The last 12 miles from US-6 are on unpaved desert roads — hard-packed gravel and dirt, passable in a 2WD truck in dry conditions, but a flat tire risk is real. After rain, the clay sections become impassable. 4WD with decent tires is the safest bet.
Directions from Delta, UT: Drive west on US-6/US-50 for about 38 miles. Turn south (left) onto a signed dirt road — watch for a small BLM sign indicating the Dugway Geode Beds. Follow the main track south and southwest for roughly 12 miles to the collecting area. The road forks several times; stay on the most traveled path. Total drive from Delta is about one hour in dry conditions.
Once you arrive, park on the flat and walk. Geodes are scattered across the surface of the eroded tuff hills. The density varies — some areas have been picked over near the main parking spot, but walking a quarter mile in any direction usually puts you into fresh ground. For better specimens, bring a shovel and dig into the exposed tuff layer on the hillsides. Embedded geodes pop out of the soft matrix with moderate effort, and they tend to be less weathered than surface specimens.
2. Topaz Mountain Area — Juab County
GPS: 39.7350°N, 113.1300°W (Topaz Mountain collecting area, Thomas Range)
Land status: BLM public land. Open for casual collecting.
Vehicle: High-clearance required. The access roads are rougher than the Dugway road.
The Thomas Range, about 20 miles south of the Dugway Geode Beds, is famous for its topaz crystals in rhyolite, but the same volcanic flows also produce small thunderegg-type geodes and lithophysae. These are typically 1 to 3 inches in diameter with thin chalcedony shells and quartz or opal linings. They are a secondary find here — most collectors come for the topaz — but worth picking up when you spot them. The geology is similar: Oligocene rhyolite with gas cavities lined by secondary silica minerals. If you are already making the drive to the Dugway Geode Beds, Topaz Mountain is a logical second stop on the same trip.
3. Sugarloaf Mountain Area — Millard County
GPS: 38.9600°N, 112.9400°W (approximate area, west of Fillmore in the Black Rock Desert volcanic field)
Land status: Mixed BLM and state land. Verify land status with the BLM Fillmore Field Office before collecting.
Vehicle: High-clearance and 4WD recommended.
The Black Rock Desert volcanic field in Millard County includes basalt flows and rhyolite domes that occasionally produce small geodes and thundereggs. The collecting here is less consistent than Dugway — you may search for hours and find only a handful of specimens — but the quality can be good, with chalcedony and agate-filled cavities. This is a better site for experienced collectors who enjoy prospecting and do not mind a lower hit rate. The area is remote, and the same desert safety precautions apply as at Dugway.
4. Pine Valley Mountains Area — Washington County
GPS: 37.3900°N, 113.5100°W (general area, north of St. George)
Land status: Mixed BLM, USFS (Dixie National Forest), and private. Check land status carefully — the private/public boundaries are complex in this area.
Vehicle: High-clearance for forest roads.
The volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks in the Pine Valley Mountains area of southwest Utah produce scattered small geodes and thundereggs. Creek gravel in the drainages coming off the volcanic terrain is worth checking — geodes erode out of the source rock and concentrate in stream channels, similar to how Iowa creeks work but on a smaller scale. The specimens tend to be small (1 to 3 inches) with agate, chalcedony, or quartz interiors. This is a secondary collecting area, best combined with other rockhounding in the St. George region.

Tools and Gear
- Water: Minimum 2 gallons per person per day. There is no water source at any of these sites. In summer, temperatures routinely exceed 100 degrees F in the western Utah desert.
- Fuel: Fill your tank in Delta before heading to Dugway. The round trip from Delta to the geode beds and back is roughly 100 miles on dirt roads, and there are no gas stations between Delta and the site.
- Shovel and garden pick: For digging embedded geodes from the tuff. A trenching shovel works well for cutting into the soft matrix.
- 5-gallon bucket: For hauling specimens back to your vehicle.
- Newspaper or towels: For wrapping geodes so they do not damage each other in the bucket.
- Rock hammer: A 2-lb crack hammer for testing geodes in the field and splitting small ones open.
- Sun protection: Wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, long sleeves. There is zero shade at the Dugway Geode Beds.
- Spare tire, jack, and tire plug kit: Sharp volcanic rock fragments on the road cause frequent flats. Carry a full-size spare, not a donut.
- First aid kit and emergency supplies: You are an hour from the nearest town on a dirt road with no cell service.
Legal Notes and Desert Safety
All four sites listed above are on public land managed by the BLM or USFS, where casual collecting of rocks and minerals for personal, non-commercial use is permitted under federal regulations (43 CFR 8365 for BLM; 36 CFR 228 for USFS). The daily limit on BLM land is 25 pounds per person per day plus one piece exceeding that weight. No permit is needed for casual collecting. Commercial collecting requires a separate BLM permit and is not covered by this guide.
Do not collect within wilderness study areas, national monuments, or military installations. The Dugway Proving Ground (a US Army facility) is immediately to the north of the geode beds — the boundary is fenced and signed, and trespassing on military land is a federal offense. Stay on established roads and within the recognized collecting area.
Desert safety is not optional. Tell someone your planned route and expected return time before every trip. Carry more water than you think you need. Do not rely on cell service — there is none in the Dugway area or at Topaz Mountain. If your vehicle breaks down, stay with it. A car is far easier for search and rescue to spot than a person walking across open desert. The best seasons for collecting are spring (March through May) and fall (September through November), when daytime temperatures are manageable. Mid-summer trips are possible but demand serious heat precautions — start at dawn and be back at your vehicle by noon.
