New Jersey's Trap Rock Geology

New Jersey does not produce the sedimentary Keokuk-type geodes found in the Midwest. What the state does produce — and produces at a world-class level — are zeolite-filled vugs in Triassic-Jurassic basalt and diabase. These crystal-lined cavities in volcanic rock are functionally identical to geodes: you crack open a piece of dark basalt and find a pocket lined with well-formed crystals. The mineral variety in New Jersey trap rock is extraordinary, with over 40 mineral species documented from the basalt vugs alone.

The geology behind these deposits starts with the breakup of Pangaea roughly 200 million years ago. As the supercontinent rifted apart, the Newark Basin formed — a half-graben filled with red sandstones and shales (the Newark Supergroup). Into this basin, basalt lava erupted in three major pulses, forming the three Watchung Mountain ridges. The Palisades diabase — the columnar cliff along the Hudson River — intruded as a thick basalt sill during the same period. As these basalt flows and intrusions cooled, gas bubbles were trapped in the rock, forming vesicles ranging from pea-sized to cavities several inches across.

Over the following 200 million years, mineral-rich groundwater circulated through the basalt and deposited zeolite minerals, prehnite, datolite, calcite, and other species inside the vesicles. The result is crystal-lined vugs that rival anything found in the famous Deccan Traps of India. New Jersey trap rock specimens sit in museum collections worldwide, and historic quarry specimens from Paterson and Upper Montclair command high prices from mineral dealers.

Top Collecting Sites

1. Garret Mountain / Paterson Area (Passaic County)

Land status: Passaic County park (Garret Mountain Reservation — collecting prohibited); historic quarries are closed and developed

Vehicle: 2WD

The Paterson area has produced some of the finest zeolite and prehnite specimens in North America. The basalt of First Watchung Mountain, exposed in quarries around Great Notch and Garret Mountain, yielded museum-grade prehnite, datolite, natrolite, stilbite, heulandite, apophyllite, and analcime throughout the 1800s and 1900s. Some vugs were large enough to hold a fist, lined with translucent green prehnite spheres or glassy apophyllite crystals.

The hard truth: nearly all the historic Paterson quarries are now closed, filled in, built over, or inside county parks where collecting is prohibited. Garret Mountain Reservation preserves the basalt ridge but does not allow mineral collecting. You will not walk in and collect specimens here. However, understanding this locality is important because it establishes what New Jersey basalt can produce, and similar mineralogy occurs in active quarries elsewhere in the basalt belt.

2. Upper Montclair and Great Notch Quarries (Essex and Passaic Counties)

Land status: Private quarries (most closed or restricted)

Vehicle: 2WD

The quarries in the Second Watchung Mountain near Upper Montclair and Great Notch produced specimen-grade datolite, prehnite, and calcite from the early 1900s through the mid-20th century. The Great Notch quarry was particularly well known for large datolite crystals — pale green to white monoclinic crystals up to 2 inches. These quarries are on private land and are not open to the public. The specimens you see labeled "Great Notch" or "Upper Montclair" in collections are historic pieces.

3. Prospect Park and Haledon Quarries (Passaic County)

GPS: Approximately 40.94°N, 74.17°W

Land status: Private quarries — access only through mineral club field trips

Vehicle: 2WD

A few active trap rock quarries in the Watchung basalt belt still produce zeolite specimens when fresh faces are blasted. These operations crush basalt for road aggregate, and zeolite-bearing vugs are an incidental byproduct. Public access is not permitted due to liability. The only reliable way to collect at active quarries is through organized field trips run by the New Jersey Mineralogical Society, North Jersey Mineralogical Society, or similar clubs. These groups negotiate access with quarry operators for supervised collecting days, typically a few times per year.

4. Palisades Diabase (Bergen County)

GPS: Approximately 40.85°N, 73.96°W (Palisades Interstate Park)

Land status: Palisades Interstate Park (collecting strictly prohibited); private quarries nearby

Vehicle: 2WD

The Palisades — the dramatic columnar diabase cliff along the Hudson River from Jersey City to Nyack — contain vugs with prehnite, calcite, analcime, and zeolite minerals. The rock is a diabase sill (a coarse-grained basalt intrusion) rather than an extrusive flow, which gives it a different texture from the Watchung basalt. The Palisades Interstate Park, which protects the cliff face, strictly prohibits mineral collecting. Fines are substantial. Do not collect here.

Some quarries in the diabase outside the park boundary have historically produced specimens, but most are now closed or on restricted private land.

5. Sterling Hill Mining Museum (Sussex County)

GPS: Approximately 41.09°N, 74.59°W

Land status: Private museum/mine — fee-based collecting on the dump pile

Vehicle: 2WD

Sterling Hill is a zinc mine turned museum in Ogdensburg that offers fee-based collecting on the mine dump. The Franklin-Sterling Hill zinc district is world-famous for its fluorescent minerals — over 80 species fluoresce under UV light, more than any other locality on Earth. The dump material contains crystal-lined vugs in marble and zinc ore with calcite, willemite, franklinite, and zincite. While these are not basalt vugs, the crystal-filled cavities deliver a similar collecting experience. Bring a shortwave UV light — the fluorescent display is the real draw. Entry fees apply; check the museum website for hours.

Recommended Tools and Gear

  • Rock hammer (3 lb crack hammer): Basalt is hard rock. A light hammer will not cut it. Bring a proper crack hammer for splitting trap rock.
  • Cold chisels (multiple sizes): For carefully extracting vugs from the matrix without damaging crystals.
  • Safety glasses: Mandatory. Basalt throws sharp fragments when struck. Full-wrap eye protection recommended.
  • Hard hat: Required at quarry visits. Bring your own — clubs may require them even on organized trips.
  • UV flashlight (shortwave): Essential for Sterling Hill collecting. A longwave UV works for some species, but shortwave reveals the most fluorescent minerals.
  • Newspaper and small boxes: Zeolite crystals are fragile. Wrap each specimen individually at the collecting site.
  • Magnifying loupe (10x): Many zeolite specimens have small but perfectly formed crystals that require magnification to appreciate.
  • Camera: Document specimens in situ before extracting. Context matters for identification.

Legal Rules and Access

Quarry Access: Nearly impossible for individuals. Active quarries in New Jersey do not allow public access due to liability insurance requirements. Your best path to quarry collecting is joining a local mineral club. The New Jersey Mineralogical Society and the North Jersey Mineralogical Society both organize supervised quarry field trips. Membership dues are modest, and the access is worth every penny.

Parks: Garret Mountain Reservation and Palisades Interstate Park both prohibit mineral collecting. Other county and state parks in the trap rock belt may have their own rules — check before collecting.

Sterling Hill: Fee-based access to the mine dump is the most accessible collecting opportunity in New Jersey. Entry fees cover the museum tour and dump collecting time. Tools are allowed; check the museum website for current policies.

Estate Sales and Shows: Given the access limitations, many of the best New Jersey trap rock specimens change hands through estate sales, mineral shows (the Franklin Mineral Show held each spring and fall is excellent), and dealer collections. If you cannot get quarry access, this is a legitimate path to building a collection of classic New Jersey material.

Private Land: Do not collect on private property without written permission. New Jersey trespassing laws carry fines, and quarry owners are particularly aggressive about enforcement due to safety concerns.

Best Season to Collect

Sterling Hill Mining Museum operates year-round but has reduced winter hours — check their schedule. Mineral club quarry trips typically happen in spring and fall when weather is moderate and quarry operations allow access windows. There is no seasonal restriction on estate sale or mineral show collecting, which is frankly how most New Jersey collectors build their trap rock collections.

If you do gain quarry access, fresh blasting faces produce the best specimens. The minerals deteriorate with weathering exposure, so recently blasted rock is always more productive than old quarry walls.
