Two Geode Provinces in One State

Missouri sits on two distinct geode-producing geological provinces, and understanding the difference between them will save you time in the field. The northeastern corner — Clark, Lewis, and Scotland counties along the Iowa border — lies on the Warsaw Formation, the same Mississippian-age limestone that produces the famous Keokuk geodes across the river in Iowa. The Ozark Plateau in southern Missouri produces a different type of geode from chert-bearing Ordovician and Mississippian formations that make up the backbone of the Ozark dome.

The Warsaw Formation was deposited roughly 340 million years ago in a shallow sea. Fossil-rich carbonates were laid down in beds tens of feet thick. As the sediment lithified, groundwater dissolved carbonate shells and replaced them with silica, building concentric shells of chalcedony and quartz crystals inside hollow voids. The resulting geodes are classic Keokuk type — round, with a chalky limestone rind and a crystal-lined interior.

The Ozark geodes come from a different process. The chert (flint) beds in the Ordovician and Mississippian limestones of the Ozark Plateau contain nodules and concretions that developed hollow interiors during diagenesis. These tend to be smaller, with thicker chalcedony or chert shells, and may contain quartz, calcite, or dolomite crystals rather than the classic druzy quartz of the Keokuk belt.

Top Collecting Locations

1. Clark County — Fox River and Tributaries (Kahoka Area)

Land status: Public waterways, private land (permission required for bank access)

Vehicle: 2WD on paved roads to access points

Clark County is the single most productive geode-collecting county in Missouri. The Fox River and its tributaries cut through Warsaw Formation limestone, and every spring flood cycle washes fresh geodes into the creek gravel. The collecting method is straightforward: wade the creek at low water, scan the gravel bars, and pick up the round, heavy stones that stand out from the flat limestone slabs.

The town of Kahoka (population ~2,000) is the staging point. Many farmers in the area have been allowing geode collectors on their property for decades — knock on doors and ask. Bring a small gift (a six-pack, a dozen eggs from the local store) and offer to close gates behind you. Most landowners will point you to their best creek crossings.

The Fox River below Kahoka is especially productive in late summer and early fall when water levels are lowest. Gravel bars become exposed islands, and you can walk them methodically. After a good rain, check the same bars again — the current rearranges the gravel and exposes fresh material.

2. Lewis County — Streams Near Canton

Vehicle: 2WD

Streams draining into the Mississippi River in Lewis County cut through the same Warsaw Formation as Clark County. The gravel bars at low water contain geodes mixed with limestone cobbles. Canton, on the Mississippi River, is the local town. The smaller creeks west of Canton are often more productive than the Mississippi itself because the smaller drainages concentrate geodes in tighter gravel deposits.

Lewis County sees less collecting pressure than Clark County, which means less competition for surface specimens. The trade-off is that access points are fewer and some require longer walks from the road. Wading is the primary access method — bring appropriate footwear.

3. Scotland County — North Fabius River Drainage

Land status: Public waterways, private land (permission required)

Vehicle: 2WD

Scotland County is the westernmost extent of the productive Keokuk geode belt in Missouri. The North Fabius River and its tributaries erode through Warsaw limestone and produce the same quality geodes as Clark and Lewis counties. Memphis, Missouri (population ~1,800) is the county seat and staging point. This area is the least collected of the three northeastern counties — a real advantage for anyone willing to drive the extra distance.

4. Mark Twain National Forest — Current River Drainage (Southern Ozarks)

GPS: 37.15°N, 91.40°W (general Current River area)

Land status: National Forest (personal collecting permitted)

Vehicle: 2WD on paved access; AWD for forest roads

The Mark Twain National Forest sprawls across southern Missouri's Ozark Plateau, covering 1.5 million acres. Creek gravel throughout the Ozarks is worth checking for geodes, but the Current River, Jacks Fork, and Eleven Point River drainages are the most consistently productive areas. The geodes here differ from the Keokuk type — they are smaller (1 to 6 inches), have thicker chert or chalcedony shells, and may contain quartz, calcite, dolomite, or occasionally galena and barite crystals.

Collecting for personal use is permitted on National Forest land without a permit. No mechanized equipment. The Ozark waterways are beautiful float streams — some collectors combine a canoe trip with geode hunting, checking gravel bars at each stop. The Akers Ferry to Pulltite section of the Current River is particularly productive.

5. Road Cuts Along US-61 and MO-15 (Northeast Missouri)

Land status: Road right-of-way (MoDOT jurisdiction)

Vehicle: 2WD (paved highway shoulders)

Road construction through the Warsaw Formation has created excellent exposures of geode-bearing limestone along US-61 and MO-15 in Clark, Lewis, and Scotland counties. Geodes weather out of the cut faces and accumulate at the base of the exposures. Collecting from the road right-of-way is generally tolerated, but park safely off the pavement and watch for traffic. Do not climb on unstable cut faces — rockfall is a real hazard.

Recommended Tools and Gear

  • Rock hammer (2-3 lb crack hammer): For splitting geodes in the field. A chisel end helps score the equator before striking.
  • 5-gallon bucket: The standard geode-hauling container. Line with newspaper to prevent rattling damage.
  • Rubber boots or old sneakers: Creek wading is the primary collecting method. Neoprene waders for cold-weather trips.
  • Garden trowel: For prying geodes from creek banks and soft limestone matrix.
  • Eye protection: Always wear safety glasses when cracking geodes. Quartz splinters are serious.
  • Pipe cutter (optional): A cast-iron soil pipe snap cutter produces clean, symmetrical halves. Worth owning if you collect often.
  • Newspaper and small bags: For wrapping specimens with delicate crystal interiors or rare mineral inclusions.

Legal and Access Information

Public waterways: Missouri law allows public access to navigable waterways. Creek beds below the ordinary high-water mark are public. You may wade and collect from the streambed itself. Do not climb the banks onto private land without permission.

Private land (Northeast Missouri): The most productive geode-collecting ground in Clark, Lewis, and Scotland counties is on private farmland. Trespassing without permission is illegal and will get you reported. Missouri farmers are generally willing to grant access if you ask politely. Some charge a small fee; most just want to know who is on their property.

Mark Twain National Forest: Personal mineral collecting is permitted on National Forest land. Collect reasonable quantities for personal use. No mechanized equipment, no commercial collecting, and backfill any holes. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways (National Park Service) is a different jurisdiction — collecting is prohibited along the federally managed sections of the Current River and Jacks Fork. Make sure you know whether you are on National Forest land or NPS land.

State parks: Mineral collecting is generally prohibited in Missouri State Parks unless specifically posted otherwise.

Best Time to Go

Late summer through early fall (August through October) is the prime window for Missouri geode collecting. Creek levels drop to their seasonal lows, exposing maximum gravel bar area. The northeastern Missouri creeks are at their best when you can wade ankle-deep across bars that were underwater in spring.

Spring collecting (April through May) can also be productive — freshly deposited geodes sit on top of gravel after the high water recedes — but the creeks are still high and cold. Winter collecting is possible but uncomfortable, and some forest roads in the Ozarks become impassable with mud.
