Why Iowa Produces More Geodes Than Anywhere Else
Iowa adopted the geode as its official state rock in 1967, and that designation was not honorary — it was geological fact. Southeastern Iowa sits on the Warsaw Formation and the lower Keokuk Limestone, both deposited during the Mississippian Period roughly 340 million years ago when a shallow tropical sea covered the interior of the continent. As marine organisms died and carbonate mud accumulated, dissolved silica migrated through the sediment and crystallized inside void spaces — often replacing fossil shells, coral heads, and burrow casts. The result is the Keokuk geode: a rough, chalky sphere of dolomite or limestone concealing an interior lined with quartz, calcite, or a mix of both.
What makes Iowa's geode belt exceptional is the sheer concentration. The Warsaw Formation outcrops across a band stretching from Lee County north through Henry and Van Buren counties, and nearly every creek cutting through that band delivers geodes into its gravel bars with every flood cycle. No other region in North America produces collectible geodes in this density. You can fill a 5-gallon bucket in an hour at most sites during the right season.
Geology of Keokuk Geodes
Keokuk geodes formed in two main host units: the lower Keokuk Limestone and the overlying Warsaw Formation (sometimes called the Warsaw Shale). The geode-bearing zone sits at or near the contact between these two units. The mechanism of formation is still debated in the literature, but the consensus model involves silica replacement of anhydrite or calcite nodules within the carbonate mud. As groundwater moved through the porous limestone, dissolved silica precipitated inward from the cavity walls, forming concentric layers of chalcedony and then euhedral quartz crystals pointing toward the center.
Some geodes never fully filled, leaving a hollow cavity lined with druzy quartz — these are the classic "crackable" geodes collectors prize. Others filled completely with solid quartz, chalcedony, or calcite (these are technically nodules, not geodes, but they are found in the same beds). A smaller percentage contain secondary minerals: pyrite cubes, sphalerite crystals, chalcopyrite, barite blades, kaolinite clay, millerite needles, goethite, and in rare cases, pale amethyst or smoky quartz points.
Externally, Keokuk geodes are easy to identify once you have handled a few. They are typically spherical to slightly oblate, ranging from 2 inches to over 12 inches in diameter (basketball-sized specimens exist but are uncommon). The outer shell is a rough, gray-brown rind of partially replaced limestone or dolomite, often with a knobby or cauliflower-like texture. In creek gravel, they stand out as conspicuously round, heavy stones among flat limestone slabs and chert fragments.
Top Collecting Locations
1. Geode State Park — Henry County
GPS: 40.8275°N, 91.3495°W (park entrance off County Road J46)
Land status: Iowa Department of Natural Resources — State Park. Collecting is permitted in designated creek beds and eroded hillsides within the park boundaries. Check current park regulations at the ranger station before collecting.
Geode State Park, located a few miles southwest of Danville, was literally named for the rocks you will find there. The Skunk River and its tributaries cut through the Warsaw Formation within the park, continuously exposing fresh geodes in the creek gravel. The best collecting happens after spring floods recede and fresh gravel bars are exposed. Walk the creek channels at low water, scanning for round stones. The park also has eroded bluffs where you can spot geodes weathering out of the clay and limestone in situ — this gives you a firsthand look at the host formation. Surface collecting only; no excavation equipment is allowed within the park. Expect to find geodes in the 2- to 6-inch range, most lined with clear to milky quartz druzy.
2. Creeks Near Keokuk — Lee County
GPS: 40.4250°N, 91.4100°W (general area — Fox River and Sugar Creek drainages south and west of Keokuk)
Land status: Public waterways below the ordinary high-water mark. Road right-of-ways at bridge crossings provide legal access to the creek. Do not cross fences or enter posted private land above the banks.
Keokuk gave these geodes their scientific name, and the streams around the city remain some of the most productive collecting grounds in the entire belt. The Fox River, Sugar Creek, and numerous unnamed tributaries of the Des Moines River all cut through the Warsaw Formation here. At low water in late summer and fall, the gravel bars are packed with geodes — sometimes stacked three deep. Locals know specific bends and riffles where geodes accumulate, but nearly any stretch of creek in the area will produce specimens. Access the creek at county road bridge crossings, park off the road, and walk the streambed. Some of the largest Keokuk geodes on record — 18 inches and up — have come out of Lee County streams.
3. Des Moines River and Tributaries — Van Buren County
GPS: 40.7275°N, 91.9630°W (near Keosauqua, Lacey-Keosauqua State Park area)
Land status: Public waterways (Des Moines River and tributary stream channels). The banks and upland areas within Lacey-Keosauqua State Park are protected — collect only from below the waterline in the streams. Outside the park, respect all private property postings.
The Des Moines River cuts a deep valley through Van Buren County, and its tributary creeks expose the Warsaw Formation across a wide area near the town of Keosauqua. The Lacey-Keosauqua State Park area is a well-known starting point. Creek cuts within and around the park reveal the geode-bearing limestone layers, and loose geodes accumulate in the creek gravel downstream. The specimens here are comparable in quality to those found in Lee County — the same formation, the same mineralogy, the same size range. Some collectors prefer this area because it gets less pressure than the Keokuk-area creeks.
4. Shimek State Forest Area — Lee County
GPS: 40.5150°N, 91.5700°W (general Shimek State Forest area, south of Farmington)
Land status: Iowa DNR — State Forest. Stream collecting is generally permitted, but verify current rules at the forest office. Access from county roads that cross through the forest.
Shimek State Forest covers thousands of acres in Lee County, and several creek drainages within the forest cut through the geode-bearing beds. The forest roads provide access to multiple stream crossings where you can park and walk the creek channel. This area sees less foot traffic than Geode State Park or the Keokuk-area creeks, so surface geodes are more plentiful. The trade-off is that the access roads are gravel and can be rough after rain. Specimens here tend to run 2 to 5 inches, with good quartz crystal linings.

Tools and Gear
- Footwear: Waterproof boots or old sneakers you do not mind getting wet. You will be walking in creek water.
- 5-gallon bucket: The standard Iowa geode collecting container. Bring two if you are optimistic.
- Rock hammer: A 2-lb crack hammer is useful for testing geodes in the field — a solid strike on a flat rock will split small ones cleanly.
- Pipe snap cutter: The best way to open geodes into symmetrical halves at home. Cast-iron soil pipe cutters (available at hardware stores) work perfectly on geodes up to 6 inches.
- Newspaper or bubble wrap: For wrapping specimens in the bucket so they do not bang against each other on the drive home.
- Chisel and safety glasses: If you prefer to open geodes with a hammer and chisel, always wear eye protection — quartz shards are sharp.
- Vehicle: A standard 2WD car reaches most creek access points in the Iowa geode belt. Park at bridge crossings or designated pull-offs.
Legal Notes and Etiquette
Iowa is generous to geode collectors compared to many states, but you still need to follow the rules. On state park land (Geode State Park, Lacey-Keosauqua), collecting is allowed only in designated areas — stay in the creek channels and posted collection zones. Do not dig into bluffs or use power tools. On state forest land (Shimek), stream collecting is generally permitted, but check with the local DNR office for current regulations. On public waterways, you may collect from the streambed below the ordinary high-water mark. The banks and adjacent land may be private — do not climb the bank and cross fences without landowner permission.
There is no statewide daily limit on geode collecting from public land in Iowa, but common sense applies: take what you can use, leave plenty for the next person, and pack out all trash. Many of these creeks run through agricultural land, and maintaining good relationships with adjacent landowners is essential for keeping access open. If a gate is closed, do not open it. If a field is planted, do not walk through it.
Best Season and Timing
The prime collecting window in Iowa runs from late July through November. Creek levels drop through the summer, exposing gravel bars that were underwater during spring runoff. The lower the water, the more gravel — and the more geodes — you can access. After a summer thunderstorm, fresh material washes downstream and deposits on the bars, so a collecting trip a few days after rain can be especially productive. Avoid spring entirely: creeks run high and fast, gravel bars are submerged, and the banks are muddy and unstable.
Early morning is the best time to arrive, both to beat the heat in August and to have first pick of any gravel bars that other collectors may visit later in the day.
