Geology: Why Maine Grows Gems
Maine sits on some of the oldest crust in North America. The bedrock here tells a story that starts in the Ordovician and runs through the Devonian, roughly 500 to 350 million years ago. During that window, tectonic collisions along the ancient Iapetus Ocean margin crumpled, heated, and partially melted the crust across what is now western Maine. The result was a belt of granitic plutons intruded into metamorphic country rock — schists, gneisses, and calc-silicates.
The gems come from the last phase of that magmatic activity. As the granitic melts cooled, residual fluids rich in boron, lithium, beryllium, and fluorine migrated into fractures and cavities. Those fluids crystallized slowly, producing coarse-grained pegmatite dikes. The Oxford County pegmatite belt, running roughly from Albany Township northeast through Paris, Rumford, Newry, and into Grafton Notch, is one of the most productive pegmatite fields in eastern North America.
These pegmatites are the source of Maine's gem tourmaline, beryl in multiple color varieties, garnet, topaz, apatite, and quartz crystals. The mineral diversity comes directly from the exotic chemistry of those late-stage fluids. Boron gave us tourmaline. Beryllium gave us aquamarine, morganite, and heliodor. Fluorine and phosphorus concentrated into apatite and topaz. This is not a place where you pick up river-tumbled agates. You work pegmatite — hard rock, chisel and hammer, reading the zonation of a dike to find the gem pockets.
Mount Mica — Paris, Oxford County

Land status: Private. The quarry sits on private land and is not open to casual walk-in collecting. Access has historically been controlled by the landowner or leaseholder. As of recent years, limited guided tours and collecting days have been offered through arrangements with the current operators. Check locally before driving out. Do not trespass.
Vehicle: 2WD sedan will reach the general area via ME Route 26 and local roads. The last stretch to the quarry is a dirt track — a truck or SUV with decent clearance handles it better in spring mud season.
Mount Mica is where American gem tourmaline history begins. In 1820, Elijah Hamlin and Ezekiel Holmes found green and pink tourmaline crystals in a pegmatite outcrop on the hill above Paris. That discovery made Mount Mica the first documented tourmaline locality in the United States. The quarry has been worked intermittently for over 200 years and has produced gem-quality green tourmaline, pink tourmaline, watermelon tourmaline (pink core with green rim), and occasional blue indicolite.
The pegmatite here is a zoned dike intruded into mica schist. Gem pockets occur in the intermediate and core zones where late-stage fluids concentrated boron and lithium. Pocket minerals include tourmaline, lepidolite mica, cleavelandite albite, cookeite, and quartz. Crystals range from thumbnail specimens to pieces several inches long. The matrix is typically white cleavelandite or massive quartz.

Plumbago Mountain / Newry Quarries — Newry, Oxford County

Land status: Private. The Dunton Quarry on Plumbago Mountain and the nearby Havey Quarry are on private land. These sites are not open to the public without permission. Some operators have offered fee-dig collecting on dump material in past seasons. Verify current access before visiting.
Vehicle: High-clearance 4WD or AWD recommended. Mine roads in this area are rough, steep, and muddy. Do not attempt in a low sedan, especially May through June when snowmelt saturates the roads.
The Newry pegmatites are among the most productive gem tourmaline sources in the eastern US. The Dunton Quarry on Plumbago Mountain has yielded world-class watermelon tourmaline, intense green tourmaline, and pink elbaite. Some crystals from this area have ended up in museum collections. The pegmatites here intrude Devonian-age metamorphic rocks and show well-developed zonation with a quartz-spodumene core grading outward through intermediate zones rich in tourmaline, beryl, and columbite-tantalite.
The dump piles, when accessible, contain broken tourmaline fragments, beryl chunks (some gem-quality aquamarine), garnet, apatite crystals, and massive quartz with embedded mica books. Careful splitting of cleavelandite masses can reveal hidden pocket material.
Fees: $40-$75/day when fee-dig days are available. Scheduling varies year to year.
Mount Apatite — Auburn, Androscoggin County

Land status: Town-owned (City of Auburn). Open to public collecting. This is one of the few pegmatite localities in Maine where you can legally collect without paying a fee or obtaining private permission. The city allows hand-tool collecting on the old quarry dumps.
Vehicle: 2WD is fine. The site is accessible via paved and graded roads from Auburn. Parking area near the trailhead. Short walk to the quarry dumps.
Mount Apatite is a classic New England pegmatite locality and the best publicly accessible gem-collecting site in Maine. The old quarries here were worked for feldspar in the early 1900s, and collectors have been picking through the dumps for decades. The pegmatite produces green and pink tourmaline, aquamarine beryl, purple apatite (the namesake mineral), garnet, smoky quartz crystals, and occasional topaz.
The tourmaline here tends toward smaller crystals than Oxford County material, but gem-green and pink pieces still turn up. The apatite occurs as prismatic purple crystals in feldspar matrix — distinctive and easy to identify. Beryl shows up as pale blue-green hexagonal prisms, sometimes with good transparency.
Work the dump piles systematically. Turn over feldspar blocks and check the undersides. Split quartz-feldspar masses along cleavage planes. The best finds come from patient, methodical searching rather than random digging.
Fees: Free. No permits required. Hand tools only — no power equipment.
Deer Hill — Stow, Oxford County (White Mountain National Forest)

Land status: Federal — White Mountain National Forest. Recreational collecting of reasonable quantities of minerals for personal use is generally permitted on National Forest land under the common variety mineral regulations. No commercial collecting. No mechanized equipment. Check with the Evans Notch Ranger District for current rules.
Vehicle: High-clearance recommended. Access roads are unpaved Forest Service roads. AWD or 4WD preferred, especially in wet conditions. Some roads close seasonally — check USFS road status before driving in.
Deer Hill is a well-known quartz and beryl locality on the eastern edge of the White Mountains. The pegmatite dikes here produce smoky quartz crystals, amethyst (uncommon for Maine), aquamarine beryl, and occasional garnet. The smoky quartz can be quite dark and occurs as well-formed prismatic crystals in vugs within the pegmatite.
The amethyst occurrence at Deer Hill is notable because amethyst is genuinely rare in Maine pegmatites. Most Maine quartz is smoky or clear. Finding purple color here is a result of trace iron and natural irradiation within the quartz crystal lattice — a geochemical quirk specific to this locality.
Collect along exposed pegmatite outcrops and in float on the slopes below. Look for angular quartz fragments with crystal faces — these indicate you are close to in-situ material.
Fees: None for personal/recreational collecting on USFS land.

Perham's is a historic mineral store and collecting destination that has operated in West Paris for generations. They sell Maine minerals, offer fee-dig access to pegmatite quarry dumps, and serve as a good first stop if you are new to Maine collecting. The staff can direct you to current fee-dig operations in the area and sell you specimen-quality material from local quarries.
If you are visiting Oxford County for the first time, stop here. Talk to the people behind the counter. They know which sites are open, which are closed, and where the recent finds have come from. That local knowledge is worth more than any GPS coordinate.

Field Identification Tips
Tourmaline vs. schorl: Both are tourmaline-group minerals. Schorl is the black, iron-rich variety and is extremely common in Maine pegmatites. Gem elbaite (green, pink, blue) is what you want. If it is black and opaque, it is schorl — still tourmaline, but not gem material. Look for translucency. Hold thin edges up to sunlight. Gem tourmaline transmits light; schorl does not.
Beryl vs. quartz: Both are hard, glassy, and can be similar colors. Beryl is hexagonal with a distinct six-sided crystal habit and no conchoidal fracture on broken surfaces. Quartz has a six-sided prism too, but terminates in a point. Beryl terminates flat (pinacoidal). If you see a six-sided prism with a flat top embedded in feldspar, that is beryl.
Apatite vs. tourmaline: Purple apatite at Mount Apatite can superficially resemble some tourmaline. The giveaway is hardness. Apatite is 5 on the Mohs scale — a steel knife blade scratches it easily. Tourmaline is 7 — a knife will not scratch it. Carry a steel file or knife and test any purple prismatic crystal you find.
Garnet in schist: Almandine garnets in Maine often weather out of mica schist as dark red, rounded dodecahedra. They pop out of the matrix when the mica weathers. Check road cuts and stream banks in metamorphic terrain. The garnets are hard (7+) and resist erosion, so they accumulate in soil and gravel downslope from outcrops.
Feldspar cleavage trick: When splitting pegmatite blocks, watch for flat cleavage faces on feldspar. Gem pockets in pegmatites are often lined with albite (cleavelandite habit — curved, platy crystals). If you see platy white albite increasing in abundance, you may be approaching a pocket zone. Slow down and work carefully.
Recommended Tools
- 3-lb crack hammer — essential for pegmatite work. You are splitting hard rock.
- Cold chisels (1/2" and 3/4") — for working seams and opening pockets.
- Safety glasses — non-negotiable. Pegmatite throws sharp chips.
- Pry bar (18" or 24") — for levering loose blocks on dump piles.
- 5-gallon bucket — for carrying material and sorting on-site.
- Newspaper or bubble wrap — wrap crystals individually. Tourmaline is brittle along the c-axis and will snap if specimens knock together.
- Hand lens (10x loupe) — for checking crystal clarity and identifying small pocket minerals.
- Steel file or knife — for hardness testing in the field.
- Knee pads — you will spend hours kneeling on sharp rock. Protect your knees.
- GPS device or phone with downloaded offline maps — cell service is unreliable in western Maine. Download your maps before leaving town.
- Water (2+ liters per person) — quarry dumps have no shade. Dehydration is a real hazard in July and August.
Legal Notes and Land Access
Private land: Most of Maine's best pegmatite quarries are on private land. You must have explicit permission from the landowner before collecting. Trespassing is taken seriously in rural Maine, and quarry owners have dealt with unauthorized collectors for decades. Ask first. If the answer is no, respect it and move on.
Town-owned land (Mount Apatite): Auburn's Mount Apatite is open for hand-tool collecting. No mechanized equipment. No blasting. Collect reasonable amounts for personal use. This is a privilege maintained by the city — do not abuse it by taking commercial quantities or leaving trash.
National Forest (Deer Hill / White Mountain NF): USFS regulations allow casual collecting of common variety minerals (quartz, feldspar, garnet) for personal, non-commercial use. You do not need a permit for small amounts collected by hand. You cannot use mechanized equipment, explosives, or collect for resale on National Forest land without a special-use permit. Regulations can change — check with the Androscoggin Ranger District or Evans Notch Ranger District before collecting.
State of Maine mineral rights: Maine law generally ties mineral rights to surface ownership. If you own or lease the surface, you own the minerals beneath it. On land you do not own, you need the landowner's permission. There is no state-level recreational collecting permit for private or state land.
Season: Most fee-dig operations and quarry sites are accessible May through October. Winter closes the roads and buries the dumps under snow. Spring (April-May) is mud season — even passable summer roads can become impassable. Plan your trip for June through September for the best conditions.
Liability: Quarries are dangerous. Vertical walls, unstable rock faces, loose dump piles, and sharp broken stone are constant hazards. Fee-dig operations typically require a signed liability waiver. Wear sturdy boots, long pants, safety glasses, and a hard hat if working near any vertical face.
