Best Time for Crystal Hunting in New Jersey

Quarry collecting in New Jersey runs on the club calendar, not the weather — Prospect Park, Sparta, and the other working quarries open through organized mineral-club field trips, so join a club and watch the schedule. The old roadcuts and talus slopes hunt best in leaf-off months, when freeze-thaw has pried fresh rock loose.

Franklin’s fee collecting runs most of the year on the managed mine property, and the fluorescent minerals that made the district famous show best after dark — bring a shortwave UV lamp and plan around the scheduled night digs.
