The Best Rockhounding Sites in Indiana
The heart of the Indiana geode belt. Lawrence County creeks are documented for geodes with calcite, celestite, fluorite, and sphalerite centers — crack a plain gray ball and find a crystal cave inside. Creek gravels around Bedford and Springville shed fresh geodes after every hard rain.
A classic geode creek north of Bloomington. Bean Blossom drains the geode-bearing Harrodsburg limestone, and its gravel bars carry loose geodes for anyone willing to wade. Most of the creek runs through private land — ask permission — but the collecting is as easy as geode hunting gets.
